I’ve been drawing laurels on things since the dawn of time. Or since college. Whatever.
When I realized my chalkboard handwriting looked nothing like Dana Tanamachi’s– laurels to the rescue.
I made a fun little video last year with my awkward on-camera self and thought it would be worth sharing again because especially at Christmas there are so many places I find myself drawing laurels and I bet you might like to draw them too!
Let’s Make Laurels! from nester smith on Vimeo.
I use these metallic paint pens and black chalkboard paper is great to have around to wrap gifts and draw on along with black scrapbook paper and black gift tags and chalk markers for windows, chalkboards and paper!
Here’s that photo I mentioned in the video of our family photo in that shoot a few years ago. Also, they kind of make it look like Chad has antlers.

Dear Nester,
This is so weird, but I hear your voice in my head when I read your blog and when I watched your video on making laurels, I couldn’t make your voice match where it was coming from! I know I heard your real voice on the video, but my mind won’t beleive it.
I know right! I have a weird, deep voice! it’s the worst!
Omg-I was thinking the same thing. I love you- and I think you’re so cute-I was totally expecting a high pitched “cutesy” voice. And your voice is NOT weird-lol!
I really like this tutorial and am excited to give it a try. Thank you!
I love these! I draw laurels all the time on things as well – they’re perfect for this time of year!
Very creative and awesome tutorial.
cute video! and pretty idea… learn something new everyday. :-)
Love your laurels! Such a simple and sensational way to “guild” a gift. I especially like the “home” picture. Thanks for the video tutorial, too!!

yes I used to work in radio and people used to always say the opposite “I didn’t think you would look like THAT!” because they only heard my voice for so long – well you’re the opposite we see you but we never hear you. I think your voice is great and you’re funny…and videoing isn’t easy…nice work and thanks for sharing something so simple yet it looks complex.
Great job on your video! ~ karen
love the tags and your video tutorial is awesome, thanks much
You are the Awesome! Can’t wait to do this with my kiddos! We are looking for a new house, so this will be the last in this house after 10 years, 4 kids were born here. We’re gonna do Christmas banners like this! Yaay!
I know I’m going to enjoy doing this — thanks so much. You did a good job on this tutorial, so just sit back and “rest on your laurels”. Laurels and their special meaning go back to the Ancient Olympics. Here’s a link: https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurel_wreath Maybe you have Greek or Roman ancestry!!
I love it, great video. Thanks!
I love this!!!!!! This is the kind of stuff that seems like it should be easy but I just wouldn’t have figured out on my own. I’m going to give it a try.
In my house, these are called “OfficialLeaves” (said all together as one word). My son determined adding “those leaf things” to anything makes it look official, thus the term was born. Glad we’re not the only family enjoying them! ?
I watched the tutorial and was completely inspired to get out the chalk board window we used last summer for our daughters wedding. Wish i had seen the wet the chalk tip sooner. I was sceptical. However, so much better that dry chalk!
Thank you for thr quick video!
Totally just tried this on gift tags. Thanks, Nester!
Can I just tell you how much I love you !! :-) You make things so organically beautiful– yet simple with no-stress-attached ! You’ve been inspiring me for awhile now and I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate you …and your sister, Emily, for that matter ! Thanks !! and Blessings heaped high on you and your family !
