Spray Painted Urns

I’ve shown these urns before but never really talked about them.  A few months ago I was ready to get rid of them.  I had them for ages and they were boring and I wanted an unboring porch.  Or at least a less boring porch.  I was just about ready to dump out the dirt and sell them at a yard sale when I figured I should at least try to spray paint them.   I didn’t have much to lose except for the few dollars I could make at a yard sale.

I bought some RustOleum gloss spray paint in Night Tide which sounded like a nice color.  My son hosed down the urns and dried them off and I put down some plastic and spray painted the first one.  At least if it turned out looking like something a clown would use to decorate his clowny house I could salvage the other.  After the first one I wasn’t sure if I loved it or hated it.  So I sprayed the second urn.

Once I put them on the porch I decided they were good.  So far no neighbors have walked by in hysterical laughter and now I’ve deicided that I really like them.

I’ve learned if I have something I really don’t like, it’s always worth the risk of destroying to to see if I can make it better {unless it’s a real antique}.

If you want to see the last thing I risked destroying with spray paint, read here.

  1. I love them! I think the color is fabulous, and I think they’re a completely fun accent to your front door. I love unexpected pops of color, and any clown who would use those is a good clown in my book. (which is really rare, because those suckers are NOT okay with me!) :)

    • Thanks for the marvelous posting! I actually enjoyed reading it, you might be a great author.I will be sure to bookmark your blog and will come back in the future. I want to encourage you continue your great writing, have a nice evening!

  2. They look great! I have some urns I need to paint, just cant decide on a color.

  3. I LOVE that color on your urns! I think it looks great and really gives a nice look. I’m so used to seeing white or black that this is a really nice change!

  4. LOVE the urns and how they turned out. It’s amazing what a little spray paint can do. Spray paint adds beauty to the world. LOL!
    Have a great day.

  5. I would not have thought to use the beautiful blue, and I love it! You’re so smart!! Very pretty front entrance!

  6. I loved those urns as soon as I saw them before! It reminds me of the garden stools. Why can’t urns be a vibrant color anyway?

  7. OMGee, Night Tide is like, my new favorite. Of course I keep saying that about the latest spray paint color I find, but seriously, glossy Night Tide is perfection!

LOOOOOOOOVE your urns my friend, and they are the perfect pop of color on your porch, in fact, those neighbors are all now secretly plotting their own porch freshing thanks to you!

  8. I did this when our house was on the market last summer to perk up our front porch-but I used shiny black. I think this blue looks amazing!

  9. Love that color! They really pop.

    You’re such a smart chick!

  10. I love the blue…I never would have thought of it, but it looks great! Different, unexpected, and still classy!

  11. I like that color! I have one of the kimberly queen ferns in our sunroom – love them and so much less messy than the boston ferns (although I love those too).

i’ve been on the lookout for one or two of the old iron (? metal? whatever) urns that gets that rusty look. Have seen a couple at antique stores – so far too pricey.

    Good idea!

  12. Jennifer says

They look great! I was planning to spraypaint 2 large terracotta pots on our front porch but didn’t get around to it before planting in them….now I’m debating whether I should remove the flowers, paint and re-pot instead of putting it off another summer!!!!

  13. I think they look fantastic. I really owe my devotion to spray to you and Sarah (TDC). It’s always worth a shot at spraying it over in a new color. The shade you chose is great!

  14. I love how those turned out! They really look like beautifully glazed pottery now. I love that vibrant blue color as well!

  15. Love the urns but I’m also quite interested in knowing what the paint color is on your front door. I’ve been looking for color ideas for my front door to match beige siding (and brown roof).

  16. I love how the urns turned out. I’d love some of these for my front porch, but unfortunately I have a black thumb :)

  17. those urns look gorgeous! What a stunning difference!!!

  18. Holy smokes, I love, love, love the way those look. Our new(ish) house has a beautiful front porch, and I am on the hunt for some urns to flank my front door, too.

    May I ask…in the first photo, are those ferns in the urns? If they are, do you move them inside during the winter or are your winters mild enough they survive outdoors year round? {I apologize in advance if this is a thupid question…}

  19. I want this rain to go away already, I have an urn that I need to paint as well – love that color!

  20. Very pretty! I did the same thing with a couple of huge flower pots a couple weeks ago. Big difference!

  21. Ohmygoodness I spray paint everything! My boyfriend gets so annoyed! I am so excited I found your blog today! I look forward to going back and reading your older post! 22. You have totally inspired me to spray paint my boring urns!!! They look SO FABULOUS! I love em! That might have to be my project for this weekend! THANKS for sharing!

  23. I love these! They looks so great on your porch!

  24. The blue urns look fab with the house and door colors. Great job.

  25. I absolutely LOVE them.

  26. I LOVE them!! I have a few pots lingering in the garage, waiting to be Freecycled ~ maybe I’ll just paint them and see what happens! :)

  27. Are you kidding me?! They are GORGEOUS! That is the prettiest blue I have ever seen.

  28. Honey Child — those are spray-painted urns…..ya need the hyphen! :-)

    • ohh, lynn, you are going to have a long day of letting everyone at the spray paint party know they forgot the hyphen! poor little neglected hyphen, never gets any respect or attention.

  29. Two summers ago I spray-painted cheap Big Lots pots that same color blue. It reminded me of France. They paint all sorts of things that beautiful glossy blue and I love it. See? You are in good company. : )

  30. The planters turned out so well. Night Tide gives them such a cool look. So awesome! Great job and thank you so much for using Rust-Oleum.

We love the project so much that we’re posting it as our Project Idea of the Day on our Paint Ideas Facebook page.

  31. It’s always fun to give something a new look, and why not try a fun new color too? They look really lovely!

  32. Good Morning!
I have been reading your blog for a while and today I just need to tell you I love your ideas even more than I love spray paint — and that’s A LOT!!
Thanks for the ideas and the gentle nudge of courage & inspiration to make our homes comfortable, beautiful and a reflection of our family’s style.

    Have a great Spring day!

  33. I don’t know what’s up with this color but it has sucked ME in! It’s popping up all over! I decided to paint our front door this color. I just bought an old wooden chair this color that I’m working on for our front porch and I’m going to be spraying an old metal milk delivery box this color! This is so NOT my color but I adore it! And on the urns — its fantastic!!!

  34. I LOVE the color!!! That looks like the color of my curtains and throw pillows!

  35. those urns are the bomb.com!!!

  36. They’re beautiful! If I had some such in my house, I would steal your idea. Might even use the exact same color. :)

  37. I think they look great in that shade. I have done the same to my planters, shiny black and it can make a nice urn look like it is an expensive iron one. Look at all the money you save by reusing what you have and not buying new ones.

  38. Oh wow, they look great. I would never think to spray paint urns. Thanks for the inspiration.

  39. Great idea… They look so simple and pretty!

  40. Are the urns concrete?
