I realized years ago that although immaculate looking homes are pretty in pictures, when I’m actually in one, I’m not comfortable. Instead, I’m worried that I’ll spill my drink on the rug or I’m wondering if it’s okay for me to move the pillow out of the way to sit down. When I’m in a perfect looking home, all I can think about is how to act and how my home compares. I get all caught up in myself and miss the real purpose of being there: connection.
There is beauty in the imperfection. There is beauty in the lived-in and loved-on and used-just-about-up. Imperfections actually play a starring role in our homes and lives. Imperfections put people at ease.
Once we learn to accept and find beauty in the imperfections, we are free to take a risk in our home and create the home we’ve always wanted.
I am an expert in creating a beautiful home.
Not because I’m highly trained (I’m not).
Not because I’m featured in magazines (I am though that does not an expert make).
I’m an expert because I’ve had practice in fourteen homes so far and I’ve learned from each one, especially the ones I’ve hated and wasted time whining about. I am an expert because despite imperfect circumstances and spaces I finally learned to love our home. Every photo and every word in this book were written from the house we rented for four years.
