House Rules: How to Decorate for Every Home, Style & Budget

6 Simple, Inexpensive Ways To Have A More Ethical Home in 2019

It’s that time of year, I’m organizing and cleaning and I bet you are too. This year I want to be more mindful of the sustainability of the things I use in my home.

Listen, it’s not about perfection.

I think there’s a lie out there that makes us feel like if we are going to move forward and be more aware of what we use in our home, then we have to do it perfectly all at once or else we’ll be accused of not knowing every possible thing about every possible product or, that we’ll be flat out told-off by well-meaning people who are ahead of us in the process.

This is not what we’re about here. I’m so glad this is a graceful space for us to learn together and I believe that small, imperfect changes in the right direction are always better than doing nothing. Amen?!

Here’s what I’m changing, and I’m including links to how you can make changes too if you want!

This year, I’m going to:

1. Ditch the Plastic

While many of us have made the effort to stop drinking from plastic water bottles ??, I bet there are still quite a few plastic bottles in our homes. Enter refillable glass bottles. Simply replace each used soap and cleaning product with a glass spray bottle filled with concentrated cleaners. Even replacing one is a great start! Each time you do, you banish a little more plastic from your home (and the planet).

2. Say Goodbye to Single-Use Plastic Bags

Plastic baggies are a pantry staple. They hold everything from school-lunch sandwiches to on-the-go toiletries. While convenient, plastic bags are extremely wasteful and can be seamlessly substituted with reusable bags. You can get started with this Reusable Bag Essentials Set for leak-proof (and cute!) storage.

3. Choose Reusable Towels

Life is messy. And no room is spared. By adding reusable towels to each room in your house (and maybe even car), you can reduce the use of paper towels. I love these European dish cloths that can be thrown in the dishwasher (it’s true!) for sanitizing.

4. Consider Tree-Free Paper

If you read that last one and don’t feel ready to let go of paper towels altogether (I hear you!) you can make an easy switch to more sustainable paper towels. Did you know there are paper products made from bamboo and sugarcane, two plentiful, fast-growing kinds of grass, rather than trees? I like these paper towels and toilet paper.

Grove is now including a pack of their tree-free paper towels and toilet paper in the offer for all new customers if you sign up here.

5. Try an Eco-Friendly Detergent

Laundry is definitely a daily chore for my household, so I wanted to find an ethical swap for detergent. Imagine a world where you didn’t have to measure out your laundry detergent, much less worry about adding any harsh dyes or chemicals to your wash. This world is here and it even leaves you with super clean, fresh smelling laundry. Check out this laundry starter set if you’re ready for a change.

6. Swap Plastic for Bamboo

Many restaurants and bars are banning plastic straws—and your household can too. This small daily change has the potential to make a huge impact. Our country as a whole uses millions of straws per day. And, plastic is a danger to the environment. Switch to bamboo straws for a more ethical, guilt-free sip.
