House Rules: How to Decorate for Every Home, Style & Budget

3 Right Now Steps to a Guest-Ready Holiday Home

Whether your neighbors are the drop-in type or you’re opening up your home to family for a week, it only takes a few small touches to create a cozy holiday home that welcomes guests.

No need to make your mom’s 10 step overnight wassail in order to have a welcoming and festive home.

1. Fold, Group and Stack Cozy Blankets, Throws and Pillows

There is something so inviting about a stack of folded throws. Instead of piling blankets in the black hole of a deep basket, throw them in the dryer for a fluff and then fold them up and stack them neatly so they can be displayed as textured decor and at the ready to warm up a guest.

Pile your stack on the sofa table, on top of the hearth or follow my lead and clear off a few decorative shelves for a few months this winter and dedicate that space so some cozy throw stacks.

2. Charcuterie in Seconds

Instagram has made food boarding into an art form. But that doesn’t mean you have to choose between spending a million dollars and all day on a huge board of goodness or settle for cheese and crackers on a paper plate. There is a middle ground and that’s exactly where we live.

I try to keep some type of cheese that isn’t a block of Velveta, some type of fruit that I can cut up and some type of crackers that aren’t goldfish in my kitchen at all times.

There are two tricks to creating an appetizing board:

1. find the smallest wood board you can and pile everything close together so it looks abundant and overflowing

2. garnish the board with some type of greenery–I used rosemary from my garden, you can use evergreen from the bush in your backyard. Just don’t eat it.

I can throw together a board at the drop of a hat or ring of the doorbell and now, so can you.

3. Elevate the Ordinary

Pay attention to the things you use every day and consider if you can switch them out for something slightly more special. Since you’re washing the dishes, washing your hands and wiping off the counters why not incorporate a new holiday scent into your routine?

Right now you can get a free holiday kit with your first purchase from Grove Collaborative here’s what’s included in your holiday kit:
