Mini Stag Head Wall Art

When I saw these glitter stag head ornaments at Target I knew they could be used for more than just mere tree hanging.

I grabbed three stag head ornaments, and at Micheal’s found three wood plaque things–they had all shapes and sizes.  And then I painted the wood things in three of my favorite colors and hot glued the stag heads on.  I just cut the hanging string off but left the loop hanger, you don’t even see them. One head fell off when I dropped it (I always insist on dropping things) but some super glue secured him.

On the back I added my high tech hillbilly hanging system.

And oh my word, totally adorable!  If you are into mini glittered stag heads on fun painted wood.

Sometimes it’s fun to just add a little playfulness into your home, and for $5.50 each this was a super easy, fast, playful adding project.

And really the point of this post is to enjoy the ornament aisle and think creatively about how to use things.  I LOVE walking through the ornaments trying to figure out how I can use certain ornaments in my house year around.

Is there a Christmas ornament you’ve used year around in your home?

Still need to buy some Christmas gifts?  If you have some store credit at Joss & Main (or even if you don’t) there’s a curated gift collection from seven bloggers (including me).  The sale lasts until tomorrow and spoiler, I this is the first time Joss & Main has sold something from Napoleon Dynamite!  Wondering what in the world Joss & Main is?  I curated an entire sale for them a few months ago and explained how and why I shop there.

It’s Christmas Craft Week! Get your wonderful craft post ready to link up on Friday, the only rules?  It must apply to Christmas, needs to let others know how to make it (don’t just link to a finished beautiful project and then we all cry because we have no idea how to make it) and no linking to etsy shops or things like that.

I can’t let the tour be left out, she wants me to tell you to join in, and that your home doesn’t have to be perfectly decorated for Christmas to be beautiful and meaningful and magical!

  1. That’s adorable! I have one of those ornaments and I love it – never thought about doing anything else with it! :)

    • as soon as I saw that one I was all “I’m doing something awesome with this” simply because I knew I liked it enough to want to show it off all year!

  2. That’s so cool! And smart with your hanging system. Years ago I liked the tiny Christmas lights so much I decorated my entire wall with garlands of those lights. I did get some comments on why I had Christmas lights up during the year, but I liked it.

  3. Off to Target!

  4. I like your stags very much. I wonder if an elf might put a wee Santa hat on their heads.
Inquiring minds would like to know if those boots holding the tree branches are a vase or really a pair of boots that you have repurposed. With you, anything is possible…and I mean that in the most complimentary of ways.

  5. My whole family was crazy, but I just did a similar project – except I actually had to remove the heads (it was quite a challenge). So although I may be a little kooky – at least I know I am not the only one to think glittery deer heads are perfect for the Christmas season!

    Take care, Laura

  6. oh wow! i love this, i wish there were targets in europe! :(

  7. I love love love this!!

  8. Love these!!! Hey, there was a famous folk artists from my home town of Montgomery, Alabama and he used the same “hanging system” for his artwork (can tabs) that you do. Thanks for sharing this great idea (and reminding us to keep our eyes open in the ornament aisle).

  9. Pop tab hanger – LOL (Pinned!)

Nester, I so lov your creativity – and that you re-use your favorite colors through your house simply by just grabbing the can you already have and using it.

  10. Love those trophy bucks! Cute idea.
I have a bird in a cage ornament that I hang in the window year round.

  11. I actually buy snowflake ornaments each year and hang them all over one wall in my living room using command hooks. Since no two snowflakes are supposed to be alike it looks great! It’s a glittery, shiney and very christmasy blizzard right in my living room. I find it balances out the christmas tree on the other side of the room. :)

  12. Not sure how I feel about animal heads on my wall but it did get me thinking of other things that might be fun. I’ve got a gallery wall of architectural pieces. Bird houses might be fun.

  13. what a great idea and such creativity! i love the stagheads— and i am inspired to try to see ornaments differently now.

  14. I wonder if those stags could impersonate reindeer as I have a collection of reindeer that would welcome them into their midst? Love your creativity, Nester.
I love pink flamingos so you can imagine how many flamingo ornaments I have accumlated over the years. Most of them stay put throughout the year. You never know where you’re going to see a pink flamingo in my home.

  15. I just saw this post this morning and had to make the trip to Target to get some stag heads! I am so excited to put them up! Thanks for the great idea!

  16. Did I miss the post about where that awesome art came from?

  17. Wow. This is a really cool idea. I really like the hillbilly hanger. What’s so funny is we have a ziploc bag with about 1000 of those saved for the school.

    Thanks again for sharing!

  18. Amen Alli! I love, love, love that artwork! Where did you find this?

  19. Such an easy craft!

  20. Such a great idea! These mini stag heads are too cute! Have a great week!

  21. So fun, festive, and sparkly!! Am definitely trying this one!

  22. Apparently I am descended from a long line of hillbillies. I learned that snazzy hanger technique from my mom.

  23. Nester, you are so inspirational, so fun, and so real. And part of that is from sharing your family. After happily reading the Nesting e-mail tonight, I started reading devotionals that are sent to me; and there was your sister, the writer of the Proverbs 31 devotional today! What a great family.

  24. Pinned to my to do list of crafts. Great idea.

  25. That is super cute! I do have an ornament that is in my home year round. It’s a little mirrored disco ball type thing. It gets left out each Christmas!

  26. I absolutely love what you did with these stag head ornaments. That is SO beautiful and creative!!! I want to try it :)

  27. How funny! I picked up this ornament last night to do the exact same thing! Love it!

  28. I loved this post soooo much I did this craft last night. I will install them today and put up a little post about it. I am putting them in my entry way, so I used leftover paint from my front door. Hopefully, they will be a nice little tie in bringing that color inside, and won’t just look, errr, odd. You know, for glittered stag head ornaments turned wall art. Ha! I love it! Thanks for a sweet idea, Nester!
