Should Bathroom & Kitchen Cabinets Match?

I thought it would be fun to share a recent email and let you all answer it:

Hi Nester,
My husband and I just put an offer on a house. It’s a fixer upper, so if our offer is accepted, we will be putting a lot of work into it.
Here’s my problem. Our downstairs bathroom will need  a new vanity. I found one I liked at Home Depot. My husband like it, but vetoed it because it didn’t look like the cabinets in the kitchen. He said that when every room is different, it looks like the owner was watching too much HGTV.

I know, he’s an idiot.

I say that’s  what makes a home look custom, what keeps it from looking like a tract home.
I don’t know that I’ve ever seen pictures of the cabinets in your bathroom (either the old one or one of the rentals), but I am almost positive that they don’t look like the cabinets in your kitchen. What is your advice in this situation?

  1. It wouldn’t even cross my mind to have them match! Seriously!

  2. Your hubby may be thinking of future resale, but honestly it doesn’t matter. I have matching cabinets in my home right now and they’re a bore.

  3. don’t match! bleh! i love a custom look! don’t worry! tell that hubby of yours it’s okay and to go with your gut! ;)

  4. I much prefer non-matching. My kitchen cabinets don’t even all match each other, and we planned it that way. My cabinets are all medium stained maple cabinets with a darker glaze, and the island is an antiqued cream color. I love it. I wanted it to look more like a piece of furniture. I want to paint my laundry room cabinets that are stained wood, and my husband thinks it is a crazy idea. But when the kids are all in school, well …. I might just surprise everyone!

  5. If they match, it will look like you used a left-over kitchen cupboard in the bathroom to save money.

Having said that, my vanity unit is timber and so is my new kitchen — but they won’t look the same!

  6. When we moved into our home 11 years ago, all the cabinets matched. It was a new home so since nothing needed to be repaired, we left it alone. As time has passed and we’ve added more family members, our needs have changed. We have upgraded the bathrooms and the kitchen. Now none of the cabinets match and I love it! Do what you love! . . . And then post pictures for everyone to see.

  7. The cabinets in your kitchen don’t even have to match!

If you are thinking re-sale, how many people even think of the cabinets matching? Most of the time when someone is looking at a home, they aren’t comparing cabinets. Add some fun in your life and make them different.

  9. No need to match, but I do worry for resale sometimes in case buyers expect that in a newer home. Personally, I love a little personality through different designs/ cabinets, though.

Never even entered my mind that anyone would want to match kitchen and bathroom cabinets. They’re two completely separate spaces, with two completely different functions, why do they need to look the same. Homes need to have personality – not be matchy matchy cookie cutter copies of each other. Viva la difference I say!

    • So funny you say that because a decade ago when we house shopped I remember the houses w matching Formica looked cheap and builders grade. I’d never want to see that in a nice house. I always assumed it was because that’s all that was available then. I do prefer that the house has a color theme. But I think I went against that myself with cream kitchen and gray bathrooms.

  11. Heya i’m for the first time here. I found this board and I to
find It really helpful & it helped me out a lot.
I’m hoping to offer one thing again and help others such as you helped me.

  12. Do u need to match floor tile to sink in bathroom

  13. Cabinets don’t have to match, they just need to compliment each other to give the home a cohesive vibe. Think of the different furnishings throughout your home, and how many different woods, stains and styles you mix and match together, then do the same with cabinets. You can create unity by keeping cabinets all the same color, but using different cabinet styles, or vice versa. Use different cabinets, but use different the same counter material in all the bathrooms. think of one word to describe your decor such as rustic cabin, or beachy, or lux, and then pick cabinetry that fits that decorating theme. Have fun with it!

  14. I personally feel the cabinets should match, deviating only between color of paint or stain, dependent on the room. The kitchen cabinets could be white and the bathroom wood tone, but I prefer they would be the very same cabinet style.
