Life in Grace

If you have yet to hear, our dear friend Edie from Life in Grace lost her home and all of her family’s possessions to a fire last Tuesday.    Her family escaped.  And in her words in an email to me and Emily on Christmas, in true Edie fashion she said

“what a christmas gift i’ve been given.  my children are all safe with not so much as a singed strand of  hair.  the mercy of Christ is boundless.”

That it is.

Edie’s blog is a blend of crafting and cooking and faith and decorating and homeschooling and fashion.  She’s one of the most intentional homemakers I know and I’ve learned much from her and been greatly influenced by her style.  Her use of color, whimsy, pattern and period pieces worked like magic in her home to create a cozy, welcoming environment where she loved her family well and homeschooled her girls.

Although her family is safe they all suffered a tragic loss.  Join me by remembering them in your prayers and thoughts.

  1. I spoke with Darcy last night about maybe setting up a PayPal account for Edie…she said she would not mind doing so if there was enough interest. If she did this would you be willing to promote here? This video is just perfect….full of grace and Glory to God. Thank you.

    • My thoughts have been in line with you and Darcy on this Talysa. Please let me know if it happens. I will be more than willing to contribute and while my blog is not on the scale of this one or yours or Edies, I will be more than happy to promote the fund on it.

Nester … this is such a beautiful tribute. My heart aches for the loss, yet it rejoices in God’s plans for them. So thankful she is a child of the King!

      Blessings to you both!

  2. “The Will of God will never take you, where the Grace of God will not protect you”… Many prayers and thoughts heading their way from our home..

  3. Thanks Nester for being so incredibly thoughtful to do this for Edie. I love her to pieces, she’s taught me so much about faith, forgiveness, indurance, motherhood and more. I am sitting here in tears, what a sweet video. We love you Edie, Steve and kids!

  4. Wow!!! What a wake up call!!!! Praying for this family who’s also a part of the Body of Chirst. My heart hurts for them and believes for their carts to overflow with abundance in every area of life.

  5. I will pray for her and her family. God will provide!!!

  6. What a beautiful tribute to a woman who so clearly loves and serves her family with her whole heart. Edie has also been a great encouragment to me in my own walk with the Lord and such an inspiration in all things house and home. I pray she will be strengthened in her walk as she and her family look to the Lord to write a new chapter in their lives.

  7. Beautiful. Continuing to pray for this faith-filled family.

  8. Please tell us where we can donate. I don’t know this family, but would like to give.

  9. Praying peace and comfort for Edie and her family. She has been such an encouragement and inspiration to me.

  10. This is beautiful. Thank you for the video. Continuing to pray for Edie, Steve & the girls.

  11. Oh, the tears.
I’ve been praying for Edie and her family since I first found out.
    But this?
To see her things. The books, Her dressers.
To see the things she had in our home, and to really know that every detail of her home is gone.
The heartbreak. The pain. The sadness.
So thankful she has her family unhurt.

My mind keeps going back to the picture of the stack of books in the video. I have a stack of well loved books in my living room that look very similar.
I know they’re just things. But when all your things are gone…
I can’t imagine how that feels.

    and Praying.

  12. I have been a follower of Life in Grace for a while and have been so sad to hear about this loss, especially this time of year. I would very much like to help if some kind of fund is being set up, please keep us posted. We’ll be keeping Edie’s family in our prayers and hearts, and will also be watching for the phoenix rising out of the ashes. Our love to all.

  13. praying and will continue. beautiful video you created to honor this beautiful family.

  14. I am saddened by their loss. But so encouraged by her faith.
What would I do if we lost our house?
How would I react if all my heirlooms were now dust?
I pray that I would only but realize that these things pass away, and I pray I would retain what matters, my faith.
I am joining you and the many others in prayer for Edie and her family.
I praise GOD that they all got out alive!
Let us know how we can help them?

  15. Wow, what a touching and incredible video…..Edie is so talented and true. She and her family will rise above the dust.

If there is anything any of us can do….please let us know.

    We’re praying for you all…..

    Lots of hugs and prayers….

  16. This was such a beautiful thing to do for a friend. I am speechless with sorrow for their loss…all I can say is praying…praying…have been praying.

  17. I had not come to know Edie’s blog before December 26. I learned of their tragedy through Rhoda at Southern Hospitality. While I could not imagine being in ther circumstance, I admire her strength to keep her head up and realize that the important things in life are safe and sound beside her – her family.

I think Edie’s story touched the blog world over the Christmas season and I know made us all realize what was most important, not only at this time of year, but every day of our lives. The gifts and the food and the decorations are nice to look at, but having our loved ones with us is all that matters.

I will continue to keep Edie and her family in my thoughts and prayers.

  18. Is there anyone that has/or is going to start some type of campaign for Edie from Life in Grace??? Would love to help replace things or give money to a fund towards her rebuilding process. That’s what this season is all about….and Lord knows she’s given so much to all of her readers! I don’t have a blog so don’t know where to start, but you are all very powerful ladies with big voices. Let us know and let’s spread the word!

  19. That was a beautiful thing to do for her! Rejoicing that everyone in her family is safe, but praying for her and her family during this terrible loss.

  20. Oh, Nester! I heard about Edie’s loss on another blog. My heart goes out to her and her precious family. Your tribute was just lovely! Keeping them in my prayers.

  21. We lost our home and all of our belongings in a fire on November 19, 2002. The road to recovery is long and hard. There are many lessons learned. The tribute you put together is amazing. Really, coming from someone that has been there, done that, I have no words, but this video will be the start of the healing process.

  22. I’ve been reading Edie’s blog for a year or so. I don’t know her personally but have been very saddened by what has happened. She is in my thoughts and prayers. Your tribute is an amazing gift. If anything collectively, other than prayer, can be done, please let us know through your blog.

  23. Beautiful tribute. Great friend. I have been praying since I first saw the news on her blog. My family would like to help somehow. I will keep my eyes open around blogland to know how and where.

  24. I have been absent from the blog world over the past week or so. This completely breaks my heart. To watch her life through her blog it feels like you know them. Edie is a woman full of faith and love and I am praying for her family. Praise God that they are all safe. What can we do to help them?

  25. Beautiful tribute to Edie and her earthly home. Truly inspirational. It is true, that through Edie’s story, that although we are grieving with her, we are also inspired by her and her abundant faith in our Lord. Edie’s true home is in our Lord and that is where she has turned her eyes in this loss. My heart and thoughts are with this family in prayer in their time of need. Edie continues the work of the Lord even through great tradegy. God bless this faithful servant and her precious heart.

  26. This song was so perfect and beautiful. What a sweet way to reach out loving hands …

  27. we just had a fire at our home early monday morning. Due to ashes from the fireplace. Very scary. We were all sleeping and our neighbor jumped the fence to alarm us by banging on all the doors and windows. We are safe thanks to him! Our children’s rooms would have been the first to go. I could not imagine such a loss.

Sorry to hear about their loss. I share that same familiarity of a sense of loss with a joy of happiness to be able to count my blessings. My family is safe.

  28. What a lovely tribute to Edie and her family. It’s such a tragedy that they’ve lost all of their worldly possessions. I know they’re just things but I just can’t imagine losing all of my things. Thank God they all came out of this unharmed. Edie and family, please know you remain in my prayers.

  29. I am praying for Edie and her family. This was a beautiful post.

  30. It is odd that I can feel such a loss for someone I do not know, someone I’ve never met. But Edie’s blog is one of very few that I follow and I can’t get her and her family off of my mind.
If you find that there is something that others of us can do…something to meet a need they have….please keep us informed.
    Thank you.

  31. Tears, tears…what a beautiful tribute. We love you, Edie!!

  32. The video is too special for words…He will restore whatever is lost!

  33. Beautiful. My heart and prayers go out to Edie and her family.

  34. Although, I’ve only *chatted* with Edie a couple of times through blogging, she and her family have remained in my thoughts and prayers since learning of their horrible loss. What a lovely tribute you’ve done for her … you are truly a wonderful friend who I know she feels so blessed to have in her life. Thanks so much for sharing this with all of us. *Becca*

  35. beautiful gift

  36. I love Edie’s blog and just watching your video makes me cry as if she is one of my dearest friends. We will continue to pray for her and her family. I am so happy that they all got out safe. Saddened by all they lost, but at least they still all have one another.

  37. Praying from MN!

  38. That was BEAUTIFUL! We are definitely praying for Edie and her family.

  39. Praying for Edie and family. What a heartfelt video.

  40. When we grieve a great loss it is hard to remember that God is close the broken hearted. Thank you for that reminder, you put into song and pictures what we can’t express in words. Beautiful, thank you and I am praying for Edie and her family.

  41. Roxie Meiske says

I do not believe how much grace this woman has. If I lost my home it would be so hard to find grace in that so soon afterward. Maybe, in a few weeks, I could get my wits about me and be thankful for what I had left; but I know me….it would not come within days.

I pray for this wonderful family.

  42. ~tears~
    Thank you.
For how well you love and live and give, Nester — you and Emily.
    And beautiful Edie.

    All really is grace… Gratitude…

    All’s grace,

  43. Edie and her family are in my thoughts and prayers.

  44. Thank you for putting that together. I found out Sunday afternoon and have been unable to get her or her family off my mind since. I’ve followed Edie’s blog almost from the beginning and have always been so thankful for her refreshing thoughts and insights. She is always a bright spot in my day. Plus the helpful tips for homemaking & homeschooling many times have been an answer to prayer for me (many many times).

My heart breaks for them, but rejoices in the fact that they were spared, and that once again she is helping me and even getting me to look at things with fresh eyes – to once again see and appreciate my blessings.

What a great blessing she is and I’m so thankful for her and her call to serve the lord.

Thank you Edie, we’ve been praying and will continue to do so.

  45. As I had posted on my blog… I do not know Edie personally, she does not know me. I follow her through her blog and she changes the lives of others probably without intent. I have thought of her a million times since I read her blog regarding the fire. I can only pray for her and her sweet family, I wish I were closer to bring her comfort of hugs, and food, and things she may need. I can pray … pray harder… If there is something I can do from all the blogging girls in Texas ..please let me know.. If there is a trust set up somewhere please advise.. so I can get the word out. Blessings to you… Thanks for the beautiful video.

  46. I first learned of Edie on a blog last night when I read about the sad events for her family. I went to her blog and after just reading a few entries I was so moved I set up till 3 am reading everything she has written since starting her blog. I was so inspired by her. I am even more inspired and in awe after reading her post today. Thank you so much for taking the time to put together this thoughtful video. The song you chose could not have been more perfect. I do believe that God has a plan and in times like these I always remember the story of the sparrow. As God cared for the sparrow I know he will care for this family.

  47. Oh my heart just aches for Edie’s loss, and while I know she’s probably completely grateful for what was spared from the fire it’s impossible not to feel such a loss. I’ve never met her but I feel like I know so much about her and I’m lifting her and her family up in prayer.

  48. I have never commented here. But I have to say this is one of the most touching things I have ever seen – and felt. The way you did this, so fast, and so stunningly heartfelt.

This community of love you women have created on the web. This map crossing, spirit filled, bonded sisterhood that I can only be a stranger looking in on. I am only now, after months of reading, beginning to understand.

I have read Edie often and have been blessed by each post. I will be praying along with everyone else. God Bless you for doing this. This is love. You have loved.

  49. Linked over from Emily’s page… how can we help?

  50. Perfect. Simply perfect. Thanks for sharing this. <3
