An Easy $5 Fall Wreath

I’ve had my eye on this Martha Wreath for awhile now and the other day, while in a craft store, I went ahead and grabbed some supplies.

Here’s what I used::

  • 14 inch straw wreath {no need to unwrap} :: $3.47 from Hobby Lobby
  • 2 packs of that rolled up wide raffia rope stuff :: $.99 each from Hobby Lobby
  • Hot glue

When I got home I did some research and found how the Martha people made the original wreath just in case there was some magic that I couldn’t see by looking at it.  Turns out, they use real corn husks, not that paper ribbon.  I followed the same method for the most part~

  • cut the rope into 6ish inch strips
  • unroll the rope to create a flat rectangle
  • cut the flat rectangle in half long ways
  • fold each part, hot glue the ends together and hot glue those onto the wreath in rows

I only did 3 rows and Martha did 4-5 I think her’s looks better, if you want that look you could cut your rectangles into thirds. And, if you don’t want to use paper ribbon rope raffia stuff, you could use wired ribbon, starched folded fabric, scrapbook paper, book pages, sheet music, wall paper, felt and I’m sure you are thinking of something right now that would work even better.

Is it fall yet?

This post added to TDC’s Fall before and after party.

  1. I have been eyeing that as well and yours is just beautiful! Who would have thunk such a simple material would be so pretty??

  2. I think I actually posted about making this wreath last year and never got around to it. I think yours looks great! I have had the stuff to make a book page wreath since before last Christmas. Did I make one? Ummm, no. Oh well.

  3. I love your wreath! Brings back memories of my Mom & Granny making corn husk wreaths & dolls. I must try it soon…and no it’s not fall here, I wish! I’m afraid it’s not even close, it was 111 degrees today. We are sooo ready for fall!

  4. Not fall yet but I am getting DARN excited for hay, pumpkins, boots, college football, sweaters, snuggling and MORE. looove this wreath, so cute!

  5. Ummmm I’m OBSESSED with this project! We just moved into a new house so I feel so disorganized in decorating for fall. But I am GETTING IT TOGETHER and pulling this off! Thanks for the wonderful inspiration! :)

  6. Wow! I am in love with this wreath! I better add this to my to do list for the Fall!! :) Thanks for the awesome ideas :)

  7. LOVE this idea!! Can’t wait to make one of my own!! Thanks for the idea!!

  8. Thanks for the tutorial!
I just love wreaths and decorate the front door of my home with a wreath for every season. Is it too early to put my Fall one on the front door? I just love fall and can’t wait to start decorating for it!

  9. Melanie A. says

Just gotta tell you that I bought a glue gun (inspired by especially this post) this week! My husband was slightly confused at my elation. Soon, when our house is covered in fabulous mistreatments and GREAT crafts like the wreath above, he’ll understand! And repent!
On a serious-er note, thanks for your blog. I’ve been reading it for a while, and it makes our situation (like many others’ these days) of hubby working out of town all week a bit easier to handle.

  10. I love this wreath. You did a beautiful job! I was so excited to make one myself, but after going to 2 Michaels and Hobby Lobby I was unable to find any raffia rope. I was so disappointed. Not sure where else to look for it.

  11. thanks for the idea and thanks to Martha Stewart

    I made my own version!

  12. This is beautiful. I am featuring it tomorrow afternoon at Grab my “featured’ button.

  13. SO very pretty and perfect for fall!

  14. I did this with burlap… oh heart be still! It is ADORABLE and I can already imagine it with a deep olive ribbon for Christmas.

  15. Do you mind telling me the color of taupe paint used in your home? I can’t seem to find the perfect shade, and that looks great in pictures. Thanks.

  16. Love this! I have a crafting party with some girlfriends and I think we may do this!! I mentioned you today!!

  17. Thank you for the WONDERFUL post! I need all the help I can get.

  18. Nester, I was reading a new blog and she copied this wreath you made. I was shocked because it was made the exact same way I made mine. (Here’s her link that links to your post:
Anyway, I must have totally missed this post of yours because you made it a good month before I made mine, and we made them literally the exact.same.way. with the same wreath and raffia ribbon and all.
I just wanted to leave a note to let you know that I didn’t see your wreath and I didn’t rip your idea off and not credit you. I came up with the idea on my own and didn’t realize you had done one a month before. I would never intentionally copy you and not credit back to you. I try to always credit back to anyone I copy.
Anyway, I’m just worried that all this time you’ve assumed I stole your idea and didn’t credit you, so I wanted to let you know that I had no idea about your wreath until literally 5 minutes ago.
As always, I love your blog. You are one of my favorites that I read!
    Keep on crafting! xoxo

Oh, dur, PS: here’s the link to my wreath:

    • oh we are not the first, nor will we be the last to copy Martha, you are like me, as soon as I saw that photo I assumed that is was the raffia ribbon. went out and bought it, then came home and read her instructions and realized it was corn husks. great minds….

      love you girl

  19. Do you supposed straight pins would work as well as a glue gun?

  20. I love this wreath and have made it several times. Floral pins work best. I can’t wait to use Rit dye to color the husks.
