31 Days :: A Writing Challenge, Every October, Every Day

31 days

Every day for years–I think six years now, I’ve hosted a 31 Day writing challenge in October. Thousands of you have joined in and taken the challenge to write on your blog, on one topic every day in the month of October. Consider this your formal invitation to join 31 Days this year.

Writing for 31 Days on one topic has helped my writing so much. Three of my topics from three different years were directly related to chapters in my book–31 Days helped me start the work and hear from you about what I missed, what I got wrong and what I got right.

nester & crystal

And this year, I’m passing the torch, this year, my dear friend, Crystal will be the new hostess of 31 Days! I’m so thrilled that this community will be cared for by such a brilliant woman who has such a big heart for online communities. A big heart for 31 Days.

You’ll be encouraged and heard and I cannot wait to see how she grows this community.

I’m pretty sure I’ll be taking the year off from writing every day in October, but I look forward to joining in again in the future.

I’d love for you to go meet Crystal, check out the 31 Days site (be sure to leave your email address so you’ll be in the loop.) Crystal is even hosting a weekly 31 Days encouragement session on Periscope every Wednesday in September. All of your questions should be answered at the 31 days site. It’s been such a pleasure 31 Daying with you!

This will be my sixth year of daring myself to write for 31 days on one topic during the month of October and it’s the fourth year I’m inviting you to do it with me. Thousands of crazy people have joined in the fun. Maybe this is your year?

The 31 Day challenge has grown up and moved out and now has its very own website! Things were getting crowded here at Nesting Place and we’ll all have a lot more room to grow over at a new place.

Come check out the new website for 31 Days.

And if you’ve taken the challenge in the past and have a story to tell about it we’d love to hear it! Maybe you turned your topic into a class, ebook, book, tattoo or one man show? Link up here and tell us how it turned out!

31 Days :: Uncomplified and REOPENED for 48 Hours

Please accept my sincerest apologies for the discrepency on the closing of the 31 Day Linkies.

Tuesday I published the Welcome to 31 Days Post and said the linkys would be open until Friday evening. I assumed they would close the same time I made them live–my mistake, the were set up to close the same time I CREATED them, I realized it a few hours later and thought I changed and announced it everywhere but no. I missed a spot and a few people missed out and it was my fault so I’m reopening the linkys till 10:55am EST Tuesday, October 8th.

I’m still learning how to de-complifiy this 31 Days thing. Its a huge task and I’m still on the side of learning the hard way–learning what NOT to do by mistake. And sometimes that’s the best education.  Same in our homes. Sometimes you just have to do something because it’s time. October 1st is the beginning of 31 days whether I’m ready or not!

Help me get the word out?

ReOpened for two Days!

Click on any topic in a rectangle to link up or find posts on the topic of your choice. Find out more about 31 Days here.

I beg you, PLEASE practice linking up first if you are unsure of how to do it or how your button will look, here’s where to practice, then come back here, click on your category and link up for real. Most browsers will show a small red “x” next to your link–that’s there for you to delete your own link if needed. I cannot promise I can fix your link if you mess it up and double links will be deleted.

If you’ve never participated before be sure to read all the info here. Thanks! xo

Day 1:

Uncomplified?

What does that even mean?

Did she make up a word?

It means exactly what you think it means, and yes, well, actually my sister made it up for me because she knows of my love of made up words. I’m still hoping to get the word yesternow in the dictionary. Rachel Ray did it with EVOO, so maybe there’s hope?

If you are a little bit country you can hillbilly uncomplicated up with an ‘m’ to make it uncomplimicated which is even better because suddenly the word itself is the opposite of what it means. Kind of like how my husband home edjumakted our boys last year. But I digress, severely.

Why?

For the next 30 days I want to explore what it means to create a home that is blessing to my family, not to view my home as place I need to serve, protect and slave over or worry and fret about. At times I’ve made creating home to be a hard, complicated thing. I’ve totally complified home making! Instead of enjoying the process, I’ve cursed it, wishing for everything to look great now so I could finally sit back, relax and enjoy it.

I’ll share some mistakes I’ve made, I’ve got a fun guest post scheduled, some posts will be serious, some will be funny some will be published 3 minutes after I woke up because I don’t always plan ahead. Most of all, I hope this series encourages both of us. Because we all live someplace and so far, I’ve never met anyone who thinks their home is perfect.

And this is right where I live right now because we bought a house in August and it’s such a dream to get to do some renovations. But we are currently living in the midst of them. So as pretty as that tightly cropped photo up there might be, here’s my reality:

home. renovated.

I desperately need to live uncomplified right now. I hope you’ll join me!

31 Days Starts Tonight! Everything You Need to Know

Wait, I’m new here, what’s 31 Days?

31 Days is an online writing challenge where we all link up on day one and then write about a topic of our choice every day in October. But we actually start on September 30th because it’s easier on time zones.

Last year’s 31 Dayers (uncategorized)

My 31 Days Series Last year

The 2013 31 Days Categories

The linkies will go live tonight sometime between 8 and 10 pm EST. I’ll have a post go live here that will link to each category. (I”ll also have my own first 31 Day post that will go up first don’t be confused). Each category will have it’s own page and own linky to help organize things. I’m shooting for having the linky posts up earlier like closer to 8, but giving myself time in case there’s a glitch somewhere, 9 linkies at once scares me, but the linky people have assured me it should work beautifully!

Pick the ONE category that BEST fits you. The categories are BROAD, like a huge funnel. So if you are talking about grocery shopping then you are in the Food category. Homeschool topic=Family category. I will not be judging anyone or deleting anything because it’s in the ‘wrong’ category. So no worries there. Pick what seems like the best fit.

Only link up with ONE category. Multiples will be deleted, I look at the back end to delete–so I’ll be looking at the landing pages, don’t worry if someone has your same title that isn’t cause for being deleted.

You will only need to link up ONE time throughout the entire 31 Day Challenge, not every day. ONCE, so be thoughtful of what type of post you want people to land on. It could be a Welcome to Such and Such 31 Days Post, it doesn’t have to be your first day’s post, but it can be. Again, if you are confused, click on 10 or so topics from last year to see different ways people did it and what would work for you.

Do not link up with your home page–use a permalink, remember, link to the place you want newcomers looking for your 31 Days posts to land forevermore–even next July. Home page links will be deleted. Practice linking up here, find out what a permalink is here.

I will not be able to edit your button, topic or wording for you, so sorry!

Still don’t understand? Use last year’s link up as your education and see how people did it, what it is and how it works–this is the best way to learn. There were over 1200 people who each linked up one time each with their own unique topic.

I will allow the link ups to stay open for 5 days, they’ll close on Friday evening.

Nesting Place reserves the right to remove any link that is considered spammy or questionable in any way.

Hope to see you tonight! Follow the #31Days hashtag for up to the minute announcements.

word

PS, please do not worry about whether or not someone has written on your topic before. Because, yes, they have. And they will in the future. This is not about coming up with a perfect topic that no one has ever heard of before. This is about accepting a challenge. This is about falling back in love with writing. This is about being afraid and saying yes anyway. This is about encouraging others with something you’ve been through or taking that first step into learning something new. There are a million little topics you could write about. Or, even if we all chose the exact same topic we would all say so many different things about it because there are a million little ways to say the same thing. I hope you don’t back out because of fear.

On that note, my baby sister, Emily‘s new book is out now, it’s called  A Million Little Ways: Uncover the Art You Were Made to Live. It’s my favorite thing she has ever written and she wrote it for all of us…click over and watch this one minute long trailer?
