2 Porch Additions that Made All the Difference

porch

Ahhh, porchiness.

I’ve wanted a big porch throughout all of our 14 different homes and this one has the best one ever!

dining room

A pair of patio doors open up (they both open which is great!) onto the porch and makes our house feel so large on nice days. The only downside to having double doors is that we don’t have much actual “wall space” on the porch–doors, windows, a chimney–all of these force us to place the large outdoor sofa on an outer “porch wall” which in some photos seems odd, but in person makes a lot of sense.

view to the porch

Right? When you see the porch through the double doors it’s like we have a whole room out there! And we do. The porch is one of my favorite parts of this house.

I made a few changes this spring that I wanted to share.

Two in particular made me love this porch even more!

Here’s the porch last fall all cozified and decked out (get it, decked out?)

porch makeover

I loved this look but the rug immediately bothered me. It’s just too tiny. But I had never paid attention to the porch before and if it truly got wet when in rained, so that was my job all winter–paying attention to the porch and if it got wet.

Guess what–the sofa barely even got wet! The floor never did get wet in the rain. The only exception–when it snowed that ONE time, we had some blowing snow get on the porch. I wish we got enough snow here to make me not want to put a rug down, but sadly, we don’t.

So compare the photo from the fall above with this one–see how the rug really brings the room together? It’s so calming. A nice plant wouldn’t hurt me either, but I’ll get to that in a few weeks.

This is a jute & sisal Safaviah rug–they do shed (don’t sit on them if you are wearing black) I’ve got similar rugs in the barn and my house and I love the look of them, but my house feels much dustier with these types of rugs. But outside? Perfect.

porch

Using what I had–our old dining room table (in the photos above you can see the older and the new one in the dining room) the zebra rug, planters and stuff from around the house, and a few little Eames style plastic chairs–it’s not my favorite part of the porch, but it gives us a table and I shopped the house to make most of it happen. And you can also see the hammock back there in the corner.

porch

The other change that I love–adding string lights. We have these type of lights in the barn, outside around our property, but using them on the porch makes it absolutely charming. It’s the perfect amount of light. We’ll be replacing the ceiling fans at some point, and I won’t be getting the ones with the light kit–we don’t need them!

Porch season is here!

I hope you enjoy porching this year!

  1. Love it! We too have a porch – a fairly square screened in porch off our family room (~14’x15′). We have neglected it since moving in our house 2 years ago, but are determined this spring to make it an extension of our family room. But I’m finding that arranging furniture in a square space is pretty hard for me! The only wall of the porch is where it joins the house – and that’s primarily all door (12′ sliding glass door). We have an octagon shaped dining table & chairs out there now in the center, with a love seat & 2 chairs placed around the sides of the porch. I’d like to keep the table, but I’m stumped at furniture placement. I want to ditch the faux wicker love seat & chairs for a comfy sofa (napping size!) & 2 arm chairs..but I’m thinking maybe I need to ditch the table? We do eat out there occasionally, but candidly, not enough to probably warrant keeping the table unless I can push it to the corner. Any ideas for arranging furniture in a square porch??

    • My advice, once you get your ideal furniture, move it around every possible way, I was surprised that having our sofa face the house actually works! yippie for porches!

  2. Beautiful! I’d love to have a big cozy porch like that we have a tiny porch at the front of the house, just big enough for one or two people. I have a bench out there and I’m just about to add a little side table, once I paint it.

We have a covered front porch that is very narrow… so we can’t put much furniture out there. What we do have though is a large covered patio off of our garage that I am hoping to tackle very soon… thanks for this great inspiration! Your porch looks so cozy and inviting and I love the you have different areas for different functions

  4. Your porch looks great! So cozy!! Do you mind divulging where your outdoor furniture is from?

  5. Love!!!!!!! If only those porch doors opened out. We have a similar arrangement on our lanai here in SW Florida. The doors open out and during the winter, we keep them open all the time. Glorious! Then, there is summer with the heat and humidity :(

  6. We WILL have a porch someday! Love the way you have made it comfortable for living! Love the new rug!

  7. Love your porch! But, don’t the flies/bugs make you crazy when you have your home doors open?

    • they make my husband crazy!!! We can’t leave them open all the time–and bug season is usually hot so we close them anyway–but we also have a screen thing that stretches across the opening–it’s weird, it came with the house, but it works!

  8. We just moved out of an upstairs apartment. When we were looking for a house, a big porch was high on my list of priorities! And, well, guess what? We didn’t end up with one. But I have porch fantasies! When it comes time for us to buy, though, a porch is happening.

  9. LOVE the furniture! Where did you find it?

  10. Your porch looks very comfy and inviting. The furniture looks great! I have been waiting to put our screened porch back together for the season until the pollen stops falling like rain. Every day everything turns yellow! Can’t wait to use it though. Enjoy your porch season.

  11. Now that our house is done and I’m starting to get a better feel for it and how we live in it, I’ve been contemplating rugs for a few of our porches, but had not considered jute/sisal! Thanks for the inspiration! Is yours an indoor/outdoor rug?

  12. Listen. You speak of throwing double doors wide to the outside world and I’m nearly taken in by the gorgeousness of it all. But listen.

WHAT ABOUT THE WASPS? AND THE BEES?!?! Aren’t you afraid those tiny winged demons will invade your precious home??? To say nothing of spiders! And you’re in the woods, too. THE WOODS. (Did you know that?)

Maybe I’m just what you’d call “indoorsy” But all the disgusting and scary crawly and/or winged things are literally the reason I don’t sit out on our very tiny patio, which is the only outdoor space we have for our third floor apartment. Sigh… But seriously. Do you worry about critters getting in? And/or is there some hack I don’t know about to keep away wasps/bees/spiders?

  13. Haha, I love the comment above, so funny! Your porch is gorgeous, looks so inviting and oh so grown-up! Alas, we are still living with the picnic table version…plus we live on the Canadian West Coast, so critters of all sizes are a daily occurrence!

  14. Lovely! Thanks for the gorgeous inspiration. Your motto, “It doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful,” has given me so much freedom to just TRY things out and see if it works. Turns out, I actually *like* decorating. Only took me 30+ years of life to figure that out. :)

  15. Hi! I have a big wrap-around porch too which I’ve always wanted, but did not realize how it lowers the light levels in my house. Great for the power bill, not so great for light bright spaces. How do you keep your rooms nice and bright with the porch covering the windows?

  16. I don’t understand why you would want to sit and face into the house when you could be looking at a view. is it possible to float the settee facing out? Love your furniture and new rug.
I love my porch out front and find we sit there more than under the pergola out back.

  17. Are there plans to screen in the porch? Which direction does the porch face? I have been wanting to add a porch to the south side of our house (the front) but am concerned about making the living room to dark. I need my sunshine and light. May have to put it across back of house, it wouldn’t affect light there. Love the furniture but would want to move, the sofa so I could look out across the lawn.

  18. So lovely! You don’t have to explain your seating arrangement to me, I totally get it. Its like Tim Gunn told you “make it work” and you just did, girl. You did. All the heart eyes.

  19. I bought some of those same string lights for my husband for his birthday this past November. They are still in a pile on the porch table! We tried hanging them with some Command hooks because i’m scared to put holes in the wood, but it didn’t work. Did you just put up nail in the corners? Any tricks? It’s also in a tricky spot to get it to the plug so I’ve been stumped about it for months now!

  20. We value communication and one of our major products is not simply a beautiful paving stone, planting or water feature installation, but a highly informed client that feels well taken care of We also want to help people understand their world better at least by knowing the hows and whys for their residential or commercial project.

  21. hey girl I just love your porch! So pretty! I wish we had a big porch. The previous owners had closed the front porch in to make the living room bigger. We like the living room but wished they had left the porch! Maybe someday we can build on one! But…we do have a small deck in the back that I want to buy a couple of chairs and a table!

  22. They look SO WONDERFUL!!! You know how I love porches. :) xoxox Miss you and want to see the updates in person soon.

    • Oops, I forgot to add that’s amazing your furniture didn’t get wet. Our front porch is so wide and our stuff still gets soaked. It’s Such a bummer. The rain gravitates towards it. haha

I bought a smaller furniture set from AE, and I could not be happier. I bought it through Sam’s Club for a condo I was moving into, but I needed a delay in the delivery. I called AE directly, and they just said let them know when I needed it. Honestly, some of the best people I have ever bought from, not to mention the beautiful quality of their products.

  24. I love this porch! We had to attach our string lights to the ceiling because when they were draped the birds sat on them and pooped all over our patio furniture. How rude!

  25. Love this!!! Just beautiful! I love that your reused your old dining table on the porch. Sorry if I missed this in another post, but where is the new round white dining table from? It is amazing! Thanks!

  26. My wife and I have lived in our home now for about 7 years and have loved it so far. We do feel though that we need to add some new additions to it to make it feel more open, but we aren’t sure what kind of additions to make. We don’t have a porch though and I think that it would be a good way to go! The porches here look amazing and I can’t wait to get home and how my wife.
