My favorite summer homes have something in common.

In a way, it’s the very thing that sets apart a vacation home and a real, lived-in, year-round home.

Vacation homes, or summer homes often have less stuff.

Less tchotchkes, pillows, rugs, drapes, surfaces, books, frames and all the other wonderful stuff we collect over time that makes home, well home.

I always enjoy our annual trips to the cottage, one of the reasons is that everything in the cottage is so intentional, even what isn’t there seems intentional.

Without a bunch of extra stuff, I can get busy focusing on doing whatever it is I need to do–from relaxing to reading to writing. There aren’t a bunch of distracting photos and paintings and layers of rugs and corners full of  beauties.

I love, LOVE those things, but sometimes, when you are always surrounded by them, they just become a beautiful, loud distraction. Sometimes you need a little break from them so you can enjoy them again.

I’ve got a fun challenge for us, to create a summer home feeling right where we are–I hope you’ll join me as we Summer-ize our homes.

I’m going to Hush My Home for summer. Not a full blow “quiet the house” which is more like a long cleanse, but this is just like we are removing sugar from our diet for a little while.

#summerized

I want my summer home to feel, light, bright, spacious and simple.

rugless

I started by evaluating my rugs in our family room. And in order to get a better feel of things, I removed them all for a few days–I hushed the floors–just to see how it felt.

I can’t wait to show you what I decided on.

I’d love for you to join me and #HushTheHouse for summer.
